Distracting from the heat!

We got our first crazy heat wave. While I managed to avoid the worst of the heat myself, the garden didn't. Here are some pictures from the beginning of the heat wave...

Turning this into a tree worked well this year!

This is a fun color combo right now.

There used to be a path here...

Some late opuntia flowers

Everything here is yellow right now!

This corner is looking much better now!

I like this combo too - still seeing whether this plant plans to survive...

It's very hard to get a good picture of the xMangave

It's been so hot, even the lizards are hiding! The heat is supposed to break tonight, so hopefully next weekend will be more gardening time!

  1. I hope it's cooled down a bit, Renee! The flowers on the Opuntia look like roses - if only the plant didn't have those vicious glochids. I was out of town attending the Garden Bloggers' Fling and apparently missed the worst of the heat here. A few things show signs of scorch but I've found no other serious problems thus far. And our marine layer was back today!

    1. I'm always jealous of your marine layer! Nicely done on missing the heat... and i'm looking forward to everyone's pictures from the fling!

  2. Unlike last year, my area dodged the worst of it. Hope you and your garden are holding up okay. The first photo...that's a Buddleja? It looks great.

    1. it is! i don't even know what kind - it flowers white and is huge now. My landscaper planted it years ago. I had planned to replace it with something more interesting, but in the end it won... I've been pruning it into a tree (or trying to). The garden is doing fine in the heat, but i don't know about the gardener... thanks for visiting!

  3. That was quite the 10 days here...at 4000' we peaked near 110 a week ago. Much nicer now, just our pre-monsoon season 98 stuff. Your Buddleja as a tree is a good idea, and that Opuntia bloom looks sugary...this was the year of the Opuntia.

    1. I love Opuntia flowers! Most of mine did well this year. I'm glad your weather has cooled off as well - we're back down to 95deg-ish here too. No monsoons though...just 4th of July "thunderstorms" (aka fireworks...) Thanks for visiting!
